Albany Wiseman

Wiseman was born in 1930 and educated at the St Albans College of Art. He is particularly known for his architectural drawings, prints and watercolours and as such received many commissions for public buildings throughout the UK. He lives in Bloomsbury and many of his best-known works are of the Georgian buildings in that part of London. Wiseman is also a teacher and has organised many painting holidays in Spain, Portugal and France,

For his prints, his medium of choice is the lithograph which is particularly suitable for the delicate colours he favours.

This work is called ‘The Phoenician’ and shows a rather impressive, elegant sailing yacht. The print dates from 1975 and is in my opinion one of Wiseman’s best works. The yacht is shown, rather unusually, from the back which accentuates the diagonal lines of the mast, reinforcing a sense of movement. This dynamism, the subject matter and the bold colours makes this lithograph stand out as quite a special work by the artist.
