Charles Bartlett RWS RE ARCA (1921-2014)
Charles Bartlett is a much-loved artist of watercolours and gorgeous, colourful aquatint etchings. His subjects are primarily sea and estuary views, frequently with boats or bridges in it, mainly inspired by his local Essex landscape. Especially his early work tends to be very abstract. This etching called ‘Mast at Sunset’ is a particular favourite of mine. The bright orange colours are so intense and convey a fantastic sense of warmth and wonder. It was printed in a very limited edition of only 40. It is undated but is from 1973 or earlier.
