Lovely work by Gerd Scharrelmann (1932 - 2001) an American artist living in San Francisco. He is a great example of an artist making sculptures using torch cut metal, a technique favoured by a lot of brutalist artists in the USA and other parts of the world. This style of art became especially popular during the 1960s and 70s especially for small ornaments and wall decorations.
This particular sculpture is made to look like a bonsai tree and is dated with a label 1977. It is made of metal leaves torch cut from patinated brass and assembled using wire to form the trunk and branches of the tree. It is mounted on a great piece of burl wood, possibly driftwood, that really suits the character of the bonsai tree.
